Martin was one of the first people I made contact with, when I began my first attempt at creating this site. He sent me lots of details and pictures, many of which were lost when my old computer died. Fortunately he has just sent me the following, to fill the void in my archives! Thanks Martin.
"He has been married to Agnieszka, pictured below, since 1997 and you
will find them in a small town in Poland, 20 miles south of Krakow, on the
edge of the Carpathians.
As well as baby Olivier, (born 2000) , they have a son Ariel (born 1998) who can just be seen in the background of the first picture. Both are little tykes, which is a bit of a shock. Ariel is named after the Ariel cafe in the Jewish quarter of Krakow where the couple spent their first evening together.
Martin also has children from his previous marriage: a son Owen (born 1977, living in Swansea) and two daughters Melitha (born 1976, a teacher in Bristol) and Verity (born 1982, also in Swansea). Even with five children, no grandchildren as yet.
Martin works via the Internet for an international association of local authorities, Energie-Cités, based in Besancon, France where he lived for 5 years (see <http://www.energie-cites.org> ).
After 20 years
rooted in Swansea in South Wales as an ecologist and countryside manager for
the now defunct West Glamorgan County Council, he now travels extensively
all over Europe - having visited all but four European countries in the last
ten years. His French is now really quite good, as is appreciation of good
food and wine - George would have been so pleased (particularly about the
latter). He wishes he could say the same about his Polish - really it is a
very difficult language. Ariel puts him to shame....
He also does some proof reading (all that good liberal education comes in
very useful) and has done a number of other small European cooperation projects
(some jointly with Agnieszka) on topics such as tourism, nature conservation
and rural development. Agnieszka is a graduate in Polish literature from the
premier Polish university, the Jagellonian in Krakow and very active as vice
chairman of the local cultural society.
Martin and Agnieszka also have a modern flat in an old building in the centre
of Krakow, which they let out to tourists. Martin has also set himself up
as a private landlord (in the UK) at the instigation of his cousin. This is
a plan for an early and well deserved retirement. This capitalist development
rather surprises him in view of his egalitarian ideals as a youngster. Sic
transit gloria mundi.
He has also recently unearthed the Cahn genealogy back to c1650 in Germany
and 1600 in the UK. Luckily he found out (to his enormous surprise) that a
great great great grandfather was an early Mormon patriarch. So much of it
was already there to be found on the Internet."
